Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF)

A spinal fusion is a procedure that leads to a union of two bones that were not naturally bond together and is aimed at alleviating pain that originates from a motion segment in the spine. During an ALIF fusion the surgeon approaches the disc through the front of the spine. This is performed through an abdominal incision. In this procedure, a larger graft can be placed because of increased access to the disc. Additionally, there is no disruption to the muscle or ligaments of the spine.
