Sacroiliac Joint Injection

The sacroiliac joint is formed where the bottom of the spine, or sacrum, meets the outer part of the hip bone, or ilium. When the sacroiliac joint is inflamed, it causes pain in the lower back area to the buttocks and occasionally down the leg. Treatment of sacroiliac joint dysfunction with sacroiliac joint injection is accomplished by depositing local anesthetic and corticosteroid directly into the sacroiliac joint under x-ray guidance. The local anesthetic provides temporary relief, and the steroid can begin to take effect over the next 3 to 5 days and can last between several days and several months.
